About

In Hula's words.

Hula Mai is a Honolulu-based collective of dancers and musicians in our twenties and thirties. We grew up dancing in our family hālau and decided to start something that could perform at events where the audience wants energy and contemporary choreography but still expects the work to be grounded.

We perform Polynesian fusion sets — hula, Tahitian, Maori, with contemporary musical arrangements. We do not call ourselves a hālau. We do call ourselves trained: most of us teach, dance, or compete. We cite our kumu when we open a set.

Our bookings tend toward corporate events, contemporary weddings, and the kind of milestone birthday where the host wants the room moving. We bring our own sound. We coordinate closely with the DJ or band on the running order.

Wedding reception (downtown Honolulu)

We wanted Polynesian performance at our reception but didn't want a tourist-style revue. Hula Mai was exactly the right fit — younger energy, clean choreography, every dancer cited their kumu when they introduced. Our friends are still talking about it.

Corporate offsite (180 guests)

Booked Hula Mai for our company offsite welcome. Performance was great and on-time; the audience-participation segment had some of our quieter team members declining to come up, but the team handled it gracefully. Would book again with a slight adjustment to that segment.
